About Big Jim Kohler

Jim Kohler put this band together in the back rooms of neighborhood taverns, where the beer was cheap, and the amps ran hot. What started as a handful of guys trading licks after last call turned into a raw, gritty electric outfit built on Chicago and Delta blues roots. The band cut its teeth on smoky Monday night residencies, playing to whoever wandered in off the street, and those nights taught them everything they know about holding a room. Word spread, and before long they were a fixture on the regional blues circuit, still carrying the same barroom grit that started it all.

Jim's blues pedigree runs deeper than most. He spent years as East Coast bandleader for Blues Hall of Fame inductee Son Seals, leading the band on the road behind the Chicago legend, including a set at Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival in Annapolis, MD. Along the way, he shared stages with Chicago guitar great Byther Smith and played alongside legendary drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, whose shuffle has driven thousands of records. Legendary Americana musician David Bromberg also came to play with Jim after shows on Long Island. In 2020, the band carried that lineage to Memphis as the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society's representative at the International Blues Challenge, the largest gathering of blues bands.

These days, the band's sound runs on heavy low-end grooves, wailing harmonica, and Big Jim's growling, whiskey-soaked vocals. Their mission is simple: keep the tavern-blues tradition alive and put it in front of new audiences who have never heard the real thing.
